Water Treatment Plant will be Constructed in Sundarijal
The Melamchi Drinking Water Project has already constructed two water treatment plants in Sundarijal and is planning to move ahead with the construction of one more in the current fiscal year. The existing two centers will treat 170 million liters of water coming from Melamchi River daily, according to the project. In the second phase, another structure will be needed to treat additional 170 million liters of water coming from Yangri and Larke rivers, said project spokesperson Rajendra Prasad Pant.
At the request of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), preparations are underway to set up a center for the second phase, he said. ADB is moving forward with that review. He said that the government has allocated Rs. 350 million in the current fiscal year and the contract can be signed this year. He said, "If we can get the contract this year, the construction work will be done next year." Even though the amount allocated by the government is less, the contract can be signed in the current fiscal year as the donor body has ensured the investment, said Chief Pant.
The project aims to expand the capacity of both the existing centers along with the construction of new ones. In the first phase, a 170 million liter capacity center was built for Melamchi. In the second phase, an additional capacity of 340 million liters is required for water treatment of Yangri and Larke. By increasing the capacity of two centers in Sundarijal, 25.05 can be made. He said, "Increasing the capacity of the existing infrastructure is enough to build another capacity of 255 million liters."
A tunnel, headbox and two water treatment plants have been constructed under the project. The construction of two centers in Sundarijal was completed last year. The capacity of both the processing centers here is 85 million liters. One was built with the financial support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the other with the financial support of the ADB. The construction projects of tunnels, headworks and processing centers and other infrastructures including pipes are being constructed by the project implementation directorate.
