More Taxes On The Internet Than Alcohol And Tobacco
Service providers have complained that the Internet service has been classified as an alcoholic and tobacco industry. This was stated by Sudhir Parajuli, Chairman of Internet Service Provider Nepal (ISPAN) at an interaction program held at the hall of National Planning Commission at Singha Durbar.
Stating that internet service was considered as a luxury when it was launched in Nepal, Chairman Parajuli expressed sorrow over the recent increase in the tax burden. "The Internet is no longer a luxury but an essential service," he said, "but the government has imposed a hefty tax on internet services that should be affordable so that everyone can consume them." Which has made internet service even more expensive.
According to Parajuli, the corporate tax in all sectors is 25 percent, while in the Internet, it is 30 percent, like in the liquor and tobacco industries. Combined with telecommunication service charges, VAT, customs duties, TDS, royalties and the Rural Telecommunication Development Fund, there are higher taxes on internet services than on tobacco and alcohol.
Giving a presentation on behalf of internet service providers at an interaction program organized by the Ministry of Communications, Chairman Parajuli said that the service could be accessible and accessible if the government reduced the tax rate.
